How To Keep Your Spare Key Hidden

Posted on

Being locked out of your house is never fun. Many homeowners have spare keys hidden under their mats or in devices that are designed to look like gardening rocks. It is never a good idea to leave a key under a mat or in a fake rock because potential burglars know that those are common places that people hide spare keys. If you want to be sure that you and only you know where your spare key is, use the following guide for three crafty ways to keep your spare key hidden.

Magnetic Measures

Would-be robbers would never think to look at every crack and crevice around the outside of your house to find a spare key. The back of a shutter can be a great place to keep the key out of sight but easily accessible. Grab some peel-and-stick magnetic stripping. Cut a piece that is roughly a few inches long and attach it to the back of your shutter. Cut another strip of magnetic tape and secure it to the back of your key. Place the two pieces of magnetic stripping together and your key will be hidden out of sight. When you need it, you can grab it, peel the magnet away, and unlock your door with ease.

Doghouse Hideout

If your dog has a doghouse, this can be a great place to hide your spare key. All you need to do is put a nail inside of the doghouse near the pitch of the roof and hang the key on the nail. This will keep the key hidden and keep it away from your dog. No one will be able to get to the key unless your dog knows them.

Use a Real Rock

Rather than using a container that is designed to look like a rock, use a real rock to hide your key. Take an old pill bottle and use permanent glue to adhere the rock to the top of the bottle. You can then unscrew the top, place the key in it, and place the top back on the bottle. Dig a hole in your garden or flower bed that is deep enough to hide the bottle. Place it in the hole and fill it with dirt to hide your key.

These are surefire ways to hide your spare key so that you can get into your home with ease. If you go to get your spare key and it is missing, you need to have a locksmith replace the locks on your doors right away. You do not want anyone to be able to gain access to your home without your knowledge. For more tips, contact a company like San Pedro Lock & Key.
